Celebrating Pi Day: Spartanburg Style

Pi Day, celebrated on March 14th, or 3.14 for math aficionados among us, commemorates the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter.

The day has taken on a new meaning to another group, though: foodies. Fans of pizza, dessert, and any circular food have embraced the mathematical inspiration of the day.

From ooey-gooey pizza to warm-and-comforting pies, here are some of the best ways to celebrate Pi Day: Spartanburg style.

Blue Moon Specialty Foods is arguably the Spartanburg restaurant best fitted to celebrate Pi Day. Blue Moon’s menu of restaurant dishes and take-home options is full of pies, including Heirloom tomato pies, baked with tomatoes grown just outside the restaurant and market in Downtown Spartanburg, and chess pies for dessert.

Blue Moon’s tomato pies are chock-full of tomatoes and ooey cheese while their chess pies are delicious, custard-based delights. Whether you want a traditional chess pie, featuring a tangy buttermilk custard, or a more luxurious chocolate chess pie, Blue Moon has your next dessert covered.

Venus Pie has made its traditional, New York-style pizza pies a longtime Spartanburg favorite. Venus Pie’s, well, pies, feature hand-tossed, thin-crust slices with fresh sauce and a plethora of topping options.

Wades Restaurant, led by three generations of the Lindsey family, have carried on a decades-long tradition of being a Spartanburg favorite known for its “good food and good service.”

The best way to finish any Wade’s meal – featuring traditional, Southern ‘meat-and-three’ options – is one of the restaurant’s long list of pies. Wade’s serves up everything from pecan pie and apple pie year-round to peanut butter pie, French silk pie, and lemon pie.

Hub City Chicken & More is a classically-Southern-casual restaurant specializing in, you guessed it, chicken. Hub City Chicken & More particularly excels in comfort dishes, like their popular chicken pot pie, with a flaky crust and the classic pot pie filling you’d expect in the South. The restaurant’s menu goes far beyond that, featuring multiple fried chicken options, traditional side dishes, and some truly delectable desserts.

Delaney’s Irish Pub has chicken pot pie on its menu, but the true Irish way to appreciate a pie is a traditional shepherd’s pie. Delaney’s’ version features slow-roasted beef mixed with mashed potatoes, carrots, peas, onion, and all topped off by a flaky puff-pastry crust.

Lunch at Venus Pie has become somewhat of a Spartanburg tradition, providing an affordable and filling meal to break up the workday. Venus Pie’s vibes, and by-the-slice options, are “out of this world” and sure to scratch any pizza-inspired it your tastebuds have.

Apollo’s House of Pizza boasts a menu full of pizza options, plus other Italian and Greek appetizers, salads, wings, and much more. The flavors are as authentic as the menu is expansive.
